PREVIEW: HALLOWEEN HAVOC! Sat 24th Oct 2026 - 3pm

October 20, 2026

Welcome ghouls and gargoyles to Mendips Raceway as we bring the curtain down on its 2026 season with Halloween Havoc.

Three West of England Championships headline the final meeting, before a spooktacular fireworks finale rounds off the season. Things truly will be going bump in the night!

The Rookie Bangers, Junior Rods and Special Rods each contest their West of England Championship, giving all three formulas a final opportunity to race for silverware at Mendips this year. With three titles up for grabs, there is plenty to look forward to as the season reaches its closing meeting as points championships are also up for grabs as Race Control will have spreadsheets, abacuses and fag packet maths agogo

ROOKIE BANGERS

So a good entry of bangers are here for their season finale. The West of England is a prestigious title which many would like to win!

Defending champion is Ashley Rice (938) who came out of a Mendips retirement to take the title last year. Louis Tompkins (105), last year’s track champion is out for a rare appearance in the Rookies. Points Championship wise, Harry Thompson (956) leads Sam Wilkinson (73) by 6 points with Joe Odhams (154) looking to make a Rookies title to add his burgeoning trophy cabinet.

The Allcomers is sponsored by the Griffin Family in the memory of the late Terry Griffin #243 who sadly lost his battle with cancer on 7th July 2022, Terry was a very popular racer here at mendips many years ago starting his racing career in the 80’s debuting in a Mk1 Granada. From that day he was hooked and went on to create “The Eagle team” with his brother Roy Griffin #600 friends Martin Quinn #242, Paul Edwards #53 and many others.

His car of choice was the trusty Triumph 2500; he would enjoy many successful years before finally retiring in the mid-to-late 90s…. It didn’t stop there though as his passion to the sport encouraged son Leroy and nephews Steve and Craig to start racing too. Terry would enjoy sharing his knowledge of the track leading to many successful races for them also, including Steve winning the banger West of England championship twice, which was special due to this meeting being one that Terry would try so very hard to win for many years previous, but just coming up short due to either car failures or track pile-ups.

Terry also enjoyed life away from racing mostly when holidaying in his caravan with wife Maria, going on walks and fishing, but his heart always remained at the banger track, hence his family using this meeting to remember him by.

He is very sadly missed by all that knew him his family would like to thank you all for attending this meeting here today in loving memory of Terry.

SPECIAL RODS

The tin top tearaways conclude a great season. Driver turnouts have dropped over the course of the season, however naturally has shortened the gap in competition with all entries for this Saturday in with a fantastic chance of winning the blue and silver chequered for 2027 and it has led to the closeness of the formula being once again, hard to predict a winner.

Points championship wise it is led by Ben Bristow (66) fresh from winning the Summer Series. He leads veteran and former silver roof Les Brice (700) by 11 points. Alex Bressington (270) had had a brilliant debut season, and succeeding dad Andy (278) would crown that off.

The West Of England is for end of season bragging rights and its Big Bres who defends that also. In a one off race, it could be anybodies!

JUNIOR RODS

The last day of school for the kids sees opportunities for all to have a last blast for season 26. Archie Bryant (511) has been undoubtably the outstanding driver of the year. He leads his nearest rival by 40 points going into the meeting, meaning that just a single point will secure the title for a second year.

Likewise the West of England is also on his roof, but the likes of Austin Latimer (620), the retiring Henry Chiplen (107) or one of the new broom Liam Mitchell (149) could be in the mix.

It’s a one off race where anything can happen and usually does!

FIREWORKS

All eyes to the skies as our traditional season ending firework display takes over. We thank our drivers, race teams, staff and most importantly you the fans for the support you have given us this season.

Next year’s fixtures will be released in due course, so keep an eye on our socials and mendipsraceway.com

Til then, see ya on the flip side

Cheers and gone

Jonny
