Remembering George Reed

18/10/2019

It is our sad duty to announce the passing of George Reed, recovery driver at Mendips Raceway for  the last fifteen years. George had been suffering with cancer since the summer, but did not let anyone know, and it would not stop him working at the Raceway. He was not well enough to attend on September 29th, and went into hospital shortly afterwards, and never returned home. He passed away on Saturday 12th October at the age of 72 years, and at his birthday on August  25th he was presented with a birthday cake before racing started.

George, together with brothers Larry and John were the mainstay of the Smeatharpe Smashers Banger Team when Roy Goodman opened Smeatharpe Stadium in 1974, and after he finished racing, he was for many  years Pit Gate man, then moving into recovery tractor duties. He joined the Mendips Raceway as recovery driver after leaving Smeatharpe, and was well known by all the staff, being a diligent member and always on site early, staying over on Bank Holiday weekends. Everyone knew George, and we will all miss him.
