Welcome once again to the mighty Mendips Raceway, on the last bank holiday weekend of the year. But no whimpers here, we're going out with a rather large bang, with a weekend of top notch racing and crashing,
The last chance for the open wheeled speed merchants to grace the raceway. It promises to be a cracker of a meeting, with track championships and the like up for grabs. First up is the Whites and Yellows Championship, last year won by Phil Mann (53), who would go on to secure a final win in the Marion Bennett trophy, our traditional August Bank Holiday trophy. Although the top goods up for grabs is the track championship, which will have a new name on the roll of honour as Dan Roots (776) has been playing on the shale this season. There are up to 8 drivers who can mathematically win the title, dependant on format – new points scoring systems are in place for the F2s this year. Realistically it's a battle between Josh Weare (736), popular traveller Tom Bennett (213) and Gerry Dommett trophy winner Jason Ward (501). Who will come out on top, it's hard to know, the last couple of Track Championships have gone right down to wire with often the knockout blow delivered in fine fashion.
The stars of tomorrow have had a good season of renewal with a lot of the top drivers reaching top age and the next generation cementing their positions at the top of the crop. Archie Bryant (511) continued his dominance of the formula this season with another final win. However Austin Latimer (620) has kept him honest with a few wins and looks to get on board. Dom Delahay (768) in his retro 205 took a heat too. They have been plenty of promising displays from lower ranked drivers such as Zach Stephens (120) and the rapidly improving Bailey Hogan (184)
An opportunity for those Mondeos to get a thrash around the raceway as vital point are up for grabs for seeding at for the Spedeworth World Final. Reigning World Champion Rob "Roona" Bugler (262) leads the entry where he will be joined by the man who took him close in July for his title defence – George Baker (216). Fellow BRCM merchants Boogie (252) and Macauley Mills (440) will join in also. Kenny Jo Gabriel (720) may not be as fast, but he brings the show so will be one to watch.
Rookies are back in good number for another showing. Last time out, it was Spedeworth's Jack Botfield (301) who was successful in the midweek meetings that he fancies another go – just don't tell his dad! Likewise it has been the likes of Henry Murray (784) who have done the wins and with close finishes which ended in a close call and a bit of afters! Plenty of cars to get involved with some of the drivers getting practice for an event later in the day
The tin tops have round 2 of the Summer Series, where the races are decided by bucket draw, and then the gird reversed before a grid on points. Tom Bristow (60) leads the way in the Summer Series following a heat and final double. Les Brice (700) turned a quick pair of heels in the other heat and Iain Truman Jnr (118) took a win in the GN. With a random draw, anything can happen!
The grand finale of the season for the wobble merchants who have entertained us brilliantly. The choice between rodding and wrecking has clearly been in attendance and some fine races without the rolls! Dan Tytheridge (3)'s display in the last couple meeting saw him throw a win away on the last bend, drifiting his robin in one of the highlights of the summer specials.
Joe Odhams (154) has a near unassailable lead at the top of the points and it would take something dramatic for his lead to be overhauled. But that doesn't mean its going to be less competitive, as the end of season madness concludes with a figure of 8, surely one of the breath-taking races as things get very, very close in the middle. And then a DD to conclude the matter, with a nice amuse bouche of fibreglass obliteration before….
….The big one! Vengance for the vanquished on the roads of the Westcountry, who have stuck behind the rotten wobble boxes on the highways and byways of the land. Several willing recipients will find themselves attributed to one of the calamatious caravans and will take to the raceway in a ride of wanton destruction as those pesky holiday wagons meet their maker. Last year it was Brad Hunt (775) who took the win in a glorious annihilation of Caravans! Make sure you cheer loudly for your favourite as they get destroyed!
