Welcome again to Mendips for the mighty May Day Weekend is here! Another busy weekend of race action, and some crashing and bashing in the form of a Thunderbolt or two!
A welcome return for the first time this year for the Rookie Bangers, nudge and spin the name of the game in a way that produces hard and fun racing. Last year it was a battle of the Staples as Barry (23) beat Harrison (2) to the points title in a reversal of 2023’s standings. Keep an eye on Brad Hunt (775) and Joe Odhams (154) who are often there or there abouts for the racers. The likes of full fat World Champ Jake Bond (743) who likes a drive in the semi skimmed version of the bangers. Plenty of cars on track – should be a good un.
The kids are alright – and two steady meetings seeing a new progression of new drivers getting their stripes and those in the middle getting better, and those at the top giving hints of dominance to come. The Bryant boys lead the way – last time Archie (511) took heat and final. Olly (111) took him close! Another great display from Tom Dalton (229) saw him become next cab of the rank. Recent race winners Dan Gunfield (16) and Ollie Melville (26) both hit the blue grade for the first time. Zach Stephens (120) hits the yellow grade – the great rule is that you go up one grade at a time to allow “bedding in” to the next grade!
A busy Easter saw the cobwebs come out for the tin tops. Iain Truman (118) took another 2 wins – for which his mother took the trophy girl duties from Katie!! Jody Jeanes (133) is now finding his feet in the special rods he took 2 wins too, including Monday’s final. It was a Beemer block out on Sunday, with Jason Oliver (303), Andrew Bressington (278) taking the podiums but Scott Weldon (517) finally getting the idea on how to drive a Special Rod not like a banger – old habits die hard! It was a good display from Tom Lewington (224) in only his second meeting!
THUNDERBOLT 25 – UNLIMITED OLD SKOOL The oldest banger title here under the Bunter promotion is back and this time its aiming to get a few bangers, and it doubles up as a WQR for our World Final. Bookings include Ricky (67) and Patch (77) Beasley, who join World Champ Jake Bond (743). Team BRCM have a full house of characters where Roona (262) fresh from abusing a transit or two in the Vans took a near full house. Jason Moore (739) and Lewis Fasey (186) will be after QR points to get on the PRI grid. Nudge and spin is the rules with the hits getting harder as the days go on.
After a brutal and damaging world qualifier, drivers and mechanics will hoping for a quieter day. It was a Scottish invasion, with wins for Gordon Moodie (7), Steven Burgoyne (674) and top honours in the final for George MacMillan (100). Points champ Dan Roots (776) took a heat being a highlight of a chastening day for the champ. Former British Champion Adam Rubery (700) took full advantage of the yellow grade for a win. Lower graders to keep an eye on will be the always rapid Dan Kent (976) and Charlie Knight (525) in the ex Tommy Farrell car. Speaking of which the Plymouthian will be hoping for a better display in his new MSR Car. The first round of the Mike Cocks Sponsered “Mighty Whites” series gets underway for those novices, starters and stalwarts to get a shot of a trophy!!
A feast of fibreglass fender bendering awaits as our plucky plastic pigs take on the challenge of surviving wobbly style with a wobble box on the back. Robins and caravans hit the bill as the last race of the day which should bring massive hilarity. Thomas Weeks (100) took a maximum score – hot rodding his way to victory lane. Matt Dixon (509) kept him honest as in the rent a robins Ryan Hinwood (728) and Stuart Brimble (00) went over and over! Keep your eyes on the skies as the Robins will fly!
