Mendip Raceways - Thunder in the Hills
F2 Stockcars
These cars are developed
from the original 1960s Junior ten cars which were old saloon cars with the
wings taken off and bumpers fitted at each end.
A 40 year development cycle has produced these fantastic single seater race cars with their big wings and powerful 2litre engines. Contact is permitted remove the car in front out of the way, but is strictly controlled-like boxing-no below the belt stuff. It is governed by the Stock Car Racing Board of Control F2 Ltd, and some 600 drivers race in this formula in Great Britain and Europe.
Bangers
Banger racing is here in all sorts of guises. It is a contact sport, and there is plenty of it! Drivers smash and bash their way through, destroy their cars, and then get out and laugh and shake hands!
Racing takes place in distinct engine capacity classes, from the little Metros, through the to the mighty Unlimited cars featuring Jaguars, Granadas and even Yank Tanks!
Hot Rods
The sophistication of the Hot Rods is the direct opposite to the contact racing cars. Hot Rod racing is non contact high speed wheel to wheel racing between hybrid race cars built with a racing pedigree from the ground up, and yet still identifiable as road saloons from their shape profiled on hi tech Kevlar and carbon fibre panelling. These cars are the fastest, and with all the overtaking manouvres carried out round the outside, it is a breathtaking spectacle as the cars dice for the lead.
Special Rods
Based on the humdrum Ford Sierra, these non contact racing cars are carefully put together examples of road cars stripped out for racing, and tuned for the best performance within a very strict set of preparation rules and regulations. The formula finds favour with those who cannot quite afford the Hot Rods, and yet wish to race a purist formula that is non contact and still close racing , without the bash and crash approach of the Bangers. It is a popular starter adult formula for young drivers leaving the MiniRods
MiniRods
From the age of 10 years old, youngsters can experience the thrill of racing in a MiniRod car here at Mendips Raceway. The cars are standard 1000cc Mini saloons, stripped out but mechanically standard in all respects. A rollcage is fitted, along with a good safe racing seat and full safety harness to ensure that the young drivers come to no harm Drivers have to retuire at their sixteenth .birthday and transfer to adult formulae.
Reliant Robins
The ultimate fun formula at Mendips Raceway. There are three meetings for the thrilling three wheelers, which are mechanically standard, but fitted out with a comprehensive rollcage and safety belts. They and roll over and over, and bounce back for more, and are the funniest thing on the Raceway!
Saloon Stock Cars
Often claimed to be the true derivatives of the original fifties stock cars, the Saloon Stock Cars are her for the first time ever for two dates. The formula is regulated by the Saloon Stock Car Association, and is truly national; appearing all over Great Britain, and some tracks in Europe. The mainstay of the formula is again the Ford Sierra/Sapphire, heavily modified and strengthened for the major contact that takes place in this form of racing.
